Typography…

“Typography is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the copy legible, clear, and visually appealing to the reader. Typography involves font style, appearance, and structure, which aims to elicit certain emotions and convey specific messages.”

Fonts, kerning, leading, point size…

Introduction to typography started quiet young. My uncle engraved grave stones by hand and I would spend my summers with my Auntie shrimping and collecting cuttle fish bones from Eastbourne beach. The Cuttle Fish bones where use to burnish gold leaf into the grave stones letters. The bones are soft but strong.

My cousin was a compositor at Eastbourne newspaper, he would lay up the type the traditional way with individual letters that has leading for spacing. As well as casting the type in lead.

Starting work I would make regular trips to the typesetters to collect bromide copy to lay up the artwork for print. Typos where fixed by cutting out and replacing individual letters. I had a close and personal relationship with spraymount and lighter fuel.

Letter formation is something I really love. Which makes creating logos and icons fun, getting the letters to fit perfectly together. Each font has its own character that we use to make the perfect choice of fonts.
