I was lucky to visit Capel Manor House just after it was built for its then owners, John Howard. My grandfather, Harold Peedle, was the Howards’ gardener when they lived in Hurst Green. I spent many lovely hours on a Red Wheelhorse tractor mower in the orchard collecting apples with my grandad; I was about 10 or 11.

I just loved the 70s sunken lounge and the sliding patio doors that led to the swimming pool that was loved by Maisy Howard. It made such an impression on me then that I still haven’t found a home concept I would love to live in more than this one. I would a build a version of it today.
Capel Manor House, a Grade II* listed British modernist icon designed by renowned architect Michael Manser (founder of The Manser Practice). Located in Horsmonden, Kent, this 1970s steel-and-glass pavilion is celebrated for sitting within the picturesque ruins of a Victorian winter garden. In 2013, English Heritage granted it a Grade II* listed status for being one of the most important domestic examples of post-war modernist architecture in Britain.
